Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
