Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public.
Summers remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and anticipate following their progress".
Summers, who previously presided over Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released emails revealed that the official communicated with the financier until the day before his 2019 apprehension for accused sex trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the technology organization said it understood the economist's choice to depart.
"We value his significant contributions and the insight he provided to the Board," the company commented.
Legislative Background
This announcement follows after both chambers of Congress agreed on Tuesday to pass a bill that would require the Department of Justice to release its records on Epstein.
The measure will subsequently proceed to the office of the White House for endorsement. He has said he expects to approve the bill, after modifying his position on the subject following pressure from his supporters.
Message Details
A group of financier-linked emails disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago included several high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The communications revealed that the economist and Epstein often met for meals, with he often attempting to introduce the academic to notable global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were released with the public, the former official expressed he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he hoped "to rebuild confidence and repair bonds with the individuals most important to me".
Professional History
The professor served in leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as director of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.
He led the university from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public roles previously on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following his declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive research organization in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was no longer affiliated with the organization.
Summers entered the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the language model, in 2023 - following a defeated move to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
