Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff following a topsy-turvy last day of competition.

Rai nailed a crucial birdie from around eight foot to seal the win, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory over Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Excitement

The champion started the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger edged a stroke clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last hole.

Playoff Decider

That led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” said the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Notable Performances

The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to make up, coming up one shot behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of 62. It was his best-ever score on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his own, but his chances of topping the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Mansell produced an excellent last round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
